Gas Prices Cause Mileage Adjustment Tax Deduction Being notified the IRS has done something is usually a scary proposition. The number on fear of most people is an audit, but the IRS actually can be helpful. When taxpayers have a universal financial problem, the agency acts fast. The United States is home to tens of millions small businesses. One of the favorite deductions of these businesses is the business mileage deduction. You get to deduct a certain dollar figure for every business mile you drive. The cost of fuel would seem to be a major factor considered when the IRS sets the figure and it is. There are others however. They include things such as insurance, vehicle depreciation and other issues. The agency notifies the public of the business mileage deduction figure a few months before the beginning of the calendar year. 50.5 cents was the magic figure set for 2008. The business mileage deduction rate is a projection. When things happen that are not projected, the IRS can change it. When Hurricane Katrina took out refineries in the gulf, for instance, the IRS cranked the deduction up. 2008 has not seen a major hurricane, but fuel prices have exploded. One needs to only be reminded that in 2000, we were paying roughly $1.50 a gallon for gasoline on average across the country. To its credit, the IRS has voluntarily stepped forward in reaction to the fuel price spikes. It has announced that it has the discretion to change the business mileage deduction rate and has set itat 58.5 cents for the last six months of 2008. Practically speaking, how do we come up with our total deduction? Simple. Multiply your business miles incurred in the first six months of 2008 by 50.5 cents. Use 58.5 for the rest of the year and add the to figures together. Business mileage deductions are not the only fuel issues involved. You can deduct mileage incurred if you have to move for a job. The IRS has also increased this rate by 8 cents to 27 cents a mile. There is one other deduction we need to mention. You can deduct certain mileage incurred while working with a charity. This is set by Congress and cannot by adjusted by the IRS, so there is no change. Gas prices are rising to the point where people’s conduct is being modified. A bigger tax deduction will not save you, but it certainly helps. Make sure to keep records of your mileage in case the IRS takes a closer look.

Iraq, Third

Monday, Monday. Another week. Good news is, for most of us, it's a four-day week. For humor, please check out John Walsh's "Barack Zelig" -- no excerpt because it's not that long and also you can ruin the joke if you select wrong. It's pretty funny. Speaking of things you've got to read, check out "Ruth's Report." So Bully Boy accepted the gift from the Democratically controlled Congress today and signed the bill into law: $162 billion. And Rick Klein of ABC News is wondering if the Dems can ge

my wife the stalker

Holy shit this post is a long one. What did I say last time about long posts?!?!? And I’m sure not too many people will actually read this. I’m probably the only one who finds our life so exciting lately. First of all, thanks to everyone for your kind words and comments last post. Sometimes, you feel like such an ass bitching about your kid. I mean, we absolutely love Shmoo, he just knows how to make us a little crazy from time to time. But we’re working on it! To explain yet another multip

My latest on-line addiction

Lex introduced me to a new listserve that has me addicted: http://www.helpareporter.com/. It is a list put out trice daily by a guy names Peter Shankman, and basically it is a list of pitches from journalists looking for expert or anecdotal points of view. I've replied to one request, a woman looking for environmental tips for new moms. The requests range from the very serious, to very light, to almost absurd. But the thing is, we're all experts in something, and if not, we all have opinions, a

Random Bullets

Not much time right now, so here we go: My online class has started, and so far, so good. My students are making a good first impression. They are a friendly bunch and very active on the discussion boards. The vast majority are returning adults, which is nice.Did I tell you all we bought a van? We bought a conversion van a couple weeks ago. We needed something bigger, especially for trips to Hometown. Chico's car seat will only fit in the middle of the back seat, and we squeeze Pistola's booster
"And let every man be swift to hear, but slow to speak, and slow to anger. For the anger of man worketh not the justice of God." -- James 1: 19-20 Abuse When the priestly sexual abuse crisis broke in 2002, one of the underreported aspects of the story was the way the Church had persecuted and silenced those who came forward with reports of abuse. In the 1960's, 1970's, and even into the 1980's, the local diocese would often counter sue the parents of the victim to intimidate them into silence.
